In the time of Christ, it was practice that the disciples would seek out the teacher they chose to follow. But in Christ, He the Master Teacher sought out the disciples, went to where they were, met them on common ground, whether the seashore and fishing boats, the tax booth, or wherever.
In prison ministry, the brothers come from their dormitories to the visitation area. We, as volunteers come from outside the gates to the same visitation area, again common ground. Our contribution is the ministry, the exhortation, the affirmation of their seeking, theirs is the response.
“For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” “Yet while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The former speaks of our approach, the latter His approach to the common ground of salvation.
The ten virgins awaiting the coming of the bridegroom all began on common ground, equally. Some trimmed their lamps in anticipation and preparation, while others did not. The former went in at the bridegroom’s arrival, the latter did not.
Christ hung on the cross between the two criminals also facing crucifixion. Common ground. One spoke with disdain and challenge. The other spoke with the recognition of his guilt, but also with the recognition of Christ for who He was, and thus found an ultimate guarantee of paradise.
So in all these it becomes not just the establishment of the common ground, but where we go from there.
